Henry was one of the most powerful princes in the Holy Roman Empire, holding the duchies of Saxony and Bavaria and was the head of the Welf dynasty. His authority extended across vast territories in northern Germany. He established Brunswick as a major political centre, shaping it into the focal point of his power and patronage.

Matilda was a Plantagenet princess, the daughter of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, making her a member of one of the most powerful ruling families in Western Europe.

The late 12th century: here we are very close to the peak of north-western European Christian culture, the point at which monastic art, noble patronage, ecclesiastical hierarchy and theology are fully integrated into a single, coherent social and artistic system. A manuscript like this is a fully integrated manifestation of a world where artistic production, intellectual formation and a life centred on the liturgical cycle are inseparable.

That situation was not to last. Within a few generations, the production of manuscripts of this scale of complexity and value begins to move out of monasteries and into urban workshops, increasingly staffed by lay professionals. The work remains skilled, often extraordinarily so, but it is no longer formed in quite the same monastic environment. But such works remain indisputably products of that great medieval European culture founded and spread by monastics.

And just look at the sheer intensity of it. These saturated, brilliant colours, all set against fields incredible decorative, geometric complexity and sophistication, gilding that still catches the light eight centuries later. Every surface is assertive and confident.

This is a useful corrective to the modern habit of imagining the Middle Ages as dull, brown and muddy and its people all hopelessly impoverished and miserable, living under the boot heel of wicked tyrants. In reality the man-made world of medieval Europe, especially in its sacred and courtly expressions, was often intensely, riotously coloured and highly patterned, a visually rich life. Textiles, enamel, parchment and stone were used to build environments that were anything but austere or dull, particularly in the Romanesque period.

Fun fact: in 1983, the Henry Gospel was purchased by the German government for over £8 million ($11.7+ million), which was at the time the highest price anyone had ever paid for a book, and one of the highest for any work of art at auction. It is now kept alternately in the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich and is displayed to the public only once every two years.

The summer before last, longtime readers will recall that we were able to make a day trip to Siena, and I got a great many photos and video clips that I haven’t had a chance to use yet. I was going through the files and found this set of photos I’d taken of the Crevole Madonna, an early work by Duccio di Buoninsegna. I rather fell in love with this beautiful Sienese Gothic Madonna and Child icon quite a few years ago when I was using it as a model for a painting I was doing myself.

I knew, of course, that we would see the glorious Maesta of Duccio at the museum of the Duomo in Siena, but I wasn’t aware that the Crevole Madonna was housed in the same room. And it was as entrancing an encounter as I could have hoped for, like greeting an old friend, unexpectedly met in a strange place.

I’ve had a few messages recently from paid subscribers who said they felt a bit overwhelmed by the number of emails coming through, (I’m committed to producing at least two posts a week, for the time being), and I wanted to quickly clarify something that might help. Some who subscribe seem not to be aware that what they’re receiving as an email newsletter is actually just a notification from the website. To which you can get access from the email.

When you open your email, you can click on the title/headline at the top and it takes you immediately to the post on the website. Click the top of the page, and you will be taken to the front page of the site. The tabs on the navigation bar at the top will show you where to click next.

So, this means nothing is time-sensitive. The entire archive is always there on the website in chronological order. Just click and scroll down to read any post at any time; it’s not going anywhere. Think of it more like a growing library than a running feed.

Early Duccio

Duccio di Buoninsegna (c. 1255–1319) was the leading painter of Siena, in Tuscany, at the turn of the fourteenth century and the founder of the Sienese Gothic school of painting. In the Crevole Madonna, Duccio already reveals the beginnings of the elongated proportions combined with softened modelling and formalised drapery treatment, that would become the defining features of the Sienese Gothic style. The Virgin’s features and hand are simplified, abstracted and subtly extended slightly beyond naturalistic proportions, lending her a refined elegance and a sense of otherworldly spiritual authority. The message is conveyed that this is not an ordinary woman; she is visually elevated above the merely earthly, material realm, reinforcing her identity as the Queen of Heaven and Theotokos.

Her slender features, including her gentle expression and captivating gaze, are enhanced by the long graceful lines of her mantle. The drapery’s highlights are shown symbolically rather than naturalistically, signifying divine light as fine gold striations (called АССИСТ/assist in Greek), a tradition Duccio has from Byzantine symbolic formalism.

But Duccio has tempered this elongation and Byzantine linearity with a gently modelled and life-like 3-dimensional softness that will come to mark western art as a whole as separate from its eastern origins. The Virgin’s stylised face and hands have a subtle volume, without crossing into gross naturalism and preserving the hieratic dignity of the icon.

The Christ Child is depicted with the more proportionate natural infant’s anatomy, with the solemn intelligence in His expression that show the theological origins of the image. In traditional Christian art, the Christ Child is never depicted as an unaware human infant. In Christian teaching He was born with the full divine knowledge, undiminished by the Incarnation, an idea many artists have struggled to express visually.

The overall effect is of lyrical and still intimacy rather than monumental royal splendour of a Maestà. In this early panel, Duccio establishes the visual language that would come to define the Sienese Gothic style: elegance and linear refinement, and a spiritualised, elevated vision of natural human forms, depicting divine realities - a difficult balance indeed.

The Crevole Madonna is widely regarded as one of Duccio’s earliest securely attributed works and forms part of the developmental sequence that leads to the Rucellai Madonna and, later, the monumental Maestà. It occupies a significant place in the evolution of late thirteenth-century Sienese painting, demonstrating the continued authority of Byzantine models alongside emerging western refinements in form and expression.

Even when they are very beautiful, Byzantine angels never appear effeminate or weak; they’re the messengers of God, warriors and the implementers of the Apocalypse, they speak to men with the authority of God.

The scriptures describe angels as warriors, guardians and heralds of divine authority.

They guard the entrance of the garden of Eden with a flaming sword (Genesis 3:24), obliterate armies in judgement (2 Kings 19:35), and appear suddenly to announce God’s will (Luke 1:11–19; Luke 2:9–10).

Those who experienced face-to-face encounters with angels of God describe beings of almost unimaginable, terrifying splendour:

At Chora Church, angels appear throughout the mosaics and frescoes as guardians, helpers of men, adorers and worshippers and attendants at the holy throne.

Their appearance at Chora follows a visual language established in Byzantine art for centuries, and of course it is the one we recognise everywhere today. The angels appear as men, large and robust, with noble features, whose shimmering garments are modelled on those of classical Greece and Rome, formally and meticulously draped and edged with gold.

Others appear as only vaguely human; mostly a face, and sometimes hands, surrounded by flaming wings. These represent the Seraphim, a higher order that attend directly to God. In Isaiah’s vision of the divine throne, each has six wings and proclaims the hymn “Holy, Holy, Holy” before God (Isaiah 6:2–3).

In the canonical Scriptures, only three are named explicitly: Michael the Archangel, the warrior and protector who leads the heavenly host; Gabriel, the divine herald who announces decisive moments in salvation history; and Raphael, the guide and healer who accompanies Tobias, and declares himself one of the “seven angels who stand before the glory of the Lord” (Tobit 12:15).

St. Michael the Archangel is prominent in the parekklesion at Chora because it was built as a funerary chapel whose art focuses on the ultimate fate of souls. Michael is specifically named in Revelation as the great warrior of heaven who casts the down the dragon Satan from the heavenly realm (Revelation 12:7–9). In Christian art he is associated with the final struggle between good and evil and with the judgement of souls.

In the next post, for paid subscribers, we will look more closely at the fresco cycle of the parekklesion at Chora Church, the great programme of the Last Judgement and the Anastasis (Harrowing of Hell). We’ll see how the prophecies and visions of the Old Testament converge with the apocalyptic imagery of the New, forming a single theological vision of the end of history and the redemption of mankind.

In all church architecture, the dome represents the heavens, and this is especially emphasised in Byzantine churches by the way the domes and different levels of the walls are decorated. From the earliest times, when Christians began building large basilicas, they started including domes as a central feature and architects and theologians worked to develop a symbolic way of organising sacred space. The building itself became a model of the cosmos.

The dome above symbolised the celestial world. The walls represented the world of the saints and the Church. The floor belonged to the earthly realm.

For this reason the most important figures in Christian theology were usually placed in the dome. In many Byzantine churches the image that appears there is Christ Pantocrator, Christ as God, creator and ruler of the universe, looking down over the church below.

Byzantine churches were designed so that architecture, theology and imagery worked together to create an immersive sacred environment, separated in levels from the ordinary quotidian natural world, though at the same time, including it. The dome is intended to imitate the vault of the heavens, the dwelling place of God.

The floor level allows the faithful during the liturgy to be surrounded by saints, prophets and biblical events, to stand inside a symbolic universe, surrounded by the communion of saints. At the altar, in the place set strictly aside for the liturgical action and ministers, is where heaven and earth meet.

Chora’s domes

But not every dome in every Byzantine church carries the image of the Pantocrator. In the two narthexes of the Chora Church, the domes show Him in the context of His mother’s presence as the “Throne of Wisdom” in the Panagia (“all holy”) with Christ Emmanuel iconographic prototype. The Panagia and Emmanuel, or Platytera type icons (with the Virgin’s hands held in the “orans” posture) are found repeated many times in Chora.

The south dome shows us a visual genealogy of the Old Testament leading to Christ. Together these domes create a visual summary of salvation history: the prophecy surrounding the Virgin, the ancestry surrounding Christ, and the Incarnation at the centre of both.

At Chora we see that the very structure of Byzantine churches reveals the order of existence: heaven above, the saints, patriarchs and prophets surrounding the faithful, and at the centre of everything is Christ Himself.

Any work of sacred art that survived the pogroms and iconoclasm of the English Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries is precious, but an object like this mid-13th century Rylands Sarum Missal (Latin MS 24, University of Manchester The John Rylands Library manuscript collection) is a treasure beyond calculation. It comes to us from the flowering of English Gothic, developed from the great Romanesque monastic book tradition that flourished under Norman governance of the islands. It preserves, in exquisite flowing line, gold and meticulous hand lettering, the living liturgical culture of medieval England at a time that could be called the absolute pinnacle of that culture.

In this Postcard, short posts on a single artefact for all subscribers and readers, we will look closely at this magnificent manuscript, and speak briefly about the liturgy it was created for, the Sarum Rite.

A Gothic Sarum Rite Missal

Copied and illuminated in the mid-13th century at the scriptorium of Salisbury cathedral the book belongs to a small group of manuscripts including the Amesbury and Wilton Psalters made for monastic houses.

The figures are elegant, elongated and stylised - with that typical Gothic S-curve - defined by strong outlining, giving them visual authority. Drapery is still stylised, falling according to the internal Gothic logic, to show the shape of the body beneath, with folds described in clear lines and controlled patterns rather than in supple, fluttering rhythms. Volume and recession in space are indicated but sparingly.

Gold grounds remain flat asserting the figures in a sacred elevated reality, rather than suggesting natural perspectival depth. The overall effect retains its formal, hieratic and elevated meaning, but we are away now from super-stylised and symbolic Romanesque geometry and into the heights of Gothic fluidity.

The Sarum Rite

It’s a missal for the Sarum Rite of the Mass, one of the national forms of the liturgy that survived the Tridentine liturgical flattening because of its age.

The Sarum Rite, or Use of Salisbury, was the most influential liturgical variant in medieval England. Developed in the eleventh century after the Norman Conquest, and is traditionally associated with St. Osmund, Bishop of Salisbury (d. 1099), who organised and standardised the liturgical customs of his cathedral. From Salisbury, this Use spread widely and, by the thirteenth century, had become the dominant liturgical form throughout much of England, as well as influencing parts of Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

Medieval Western liturgy was not universally standardised and dioceses and religious houses maintained distinct “Uses” with variations in calendar, chant, ceremonial detail and textual arrangement. The Sarum Use chant repertory was extensive, and Sarum missals, breviaries, and graduals often preserve distinctive melodic traditions. It remained in use until the English Reformation in the sixteenth century, when it was displaced by the Protestant Book of Common Prayer.

It has recently seen something of a revival among tradition minded Catholics, Anglicans and Western Rite Orthodox.

Centuries before lifestyle blogs and biohacking, medieval medicine assumed that health was the natural state of a properly ordered life. Body, temperament, season, diet, labour and spiritual disposition belonged to one coherent system. The starting assumption was that the human person was an integrated whole, created correctly by God, and if he lives his life in a balanced way, health is simply the default mode.

Modern medicine approaches the human person in compartments, each the province of highly trained specialists. Organs and systems are treated separately and care begins only once a pathology is detectable as symptoms. The empirical method has yielded extraordinary technical precision, and we can certainly cure many ailments that were debilitating or deadly to our ancestors. Yet we are starting to see the limitations of over-reliance on this system. In many areas of life, we moderns operate by analytical division, cordoning off the parts rather than seeing them as integrated into the whole1.

This is why one of the most widely produced and copied medieval books was “Tacinum Sanitatis,” a guide that combined topics of health, wellness, exercise, cooking and horticulture seems like something we could really use today.

In today’s Postcard, we’ll have a fun look at a popular medieval “wellness” book a copy of which I’ve wanted to get my hands on for ages. The charm and delight of the illustrations, blending instruction and beauty, rivals anything from Beatrix Potter or her genre. In these manuscripts created for the medical profession we have a glimpse into medieval Christian society’s understanding of how human beings work.

“Tables of Health”

Eat fresh local and seasonal vegetables, aged cheeses, eggs, fish, fowl and meat; wear only natural fibers like wool and linen; do regular manual labour or exercise outdoors; relax with friends often. Touch grass. It’s certainly the sort of thing you find online every day. But the idea of “wellness” - an integrated condition of balanced mental, spiritual and physical health - is not an invention of the hippies.

The beautifully illustrated copies of the Tacuinum Sanitatis are holistic medical manuals written and illuminated in Lombard and Venetian workshops from the second half of the 14th century to around 1450. The 15th century books, in vernacular Italian, are based on 13th and 14th century Latin adaptation of an un-illustrated 11th century Arabic medical treatise by the Islamic scholar Ibn Butlan of Damascus, originally titled Taqwīm al-Ṣiḥḥa (“Tables of Health”), that was itself based on the medical writing of Galen, in Greek.

They emphasize proper food and drink, exercise and rest, fresh air, frequent sleep and regulation of emotions, giving illustrated descriptions and precepts, the medicinal properties of vegetables and fruits, spices and all sorts of foods, and also seasons, natural events and emotional conditions, and their effects on the human body and how to correct imbalances, that were thought to be the source of ill health.

Medicine by “humours” and heat: Galen

Reading medieval medical writing can seem odd to us. Hildegard and others write of certain plants and other substances being “hot” or “cold” “dry” or “moist.” But these terms do not refer to how something feels to the touch. They belong to a medical language in which every substance possessed qualities that acted upon the body in predictable ways. To call a plant “hot” was to describe its effect: how it stimulated, dried, thinned, opened, or strengthened. Medieval medicine assumed that the human body existed in constant exchange with its environment, and that health depended on maintaining balance within that dynamic relationship.

Galen’s medical system, which dominated both Islamic and European medicine for over a millennium, was built on the theory of the “four humors,” basic substances of the body: blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Health consisted in the proper balance of these humors within the body, each associated with qualities of hot, cold, dry, and moist, and with the patient’s temperament and age and the season. Disease arose when that equilibrium was disturbed. Treatment therefore aimed at restoring proportion through diet, exercise regimen, environment, and carefully chosen and prepared substances.

Galen’s medicine understood the body as a dynamic system in constant interaction with climate, food, activity, and emotional state, rather than as a collection of isolated parts. This integration of mind, body and soul, in which ill health was seen as disturbance or excess, a loss of natural balance.

The painting by Stefan Lochner is among the most concentrated visual expressions of the western iconographic prototype we call the “hortus conclusus”. The phrase is drawn from the Bible’s Song of Songs that begins, “A garden enclosed is my sister, my spouse…” It has always functioned in Christian spiritual theology as a Marian title, signifying virginity, purity and the inviolate womb in which the Incarnation took place.

In the later Middle Ages, the hortus conclusus prototype was increasingly visualised using the forms of fashionable private pleasure gardens familiar to the aristocracy and urban elite. This convergence allowed Marian images to appropriate the language of cultivated leisure: enclosure, refinement, ordered nature, while reorienting it toward chastity, contemplation and sacred presence.

Our word “paradise” derives from the Old Persian pairidaeza, meaning an enclosed garden or walled park, a term that entered Greek as paradeisos and then Latin as paradisus. Originally denoting royal pleasure gardens, the word was adopted in the Septuagint to translate the Garden of Eden, permanently linking enclosure, order, and cultivated beauty with the biblical vision of divine dwelling.

Lochner renders this theological metaphor with typical late medieval literalness. Mary is seated within a fully enclosed rose garden, its low trellis fence clearly marking the boundary between sacred interior and profane exterior, heaven and the world. The garden is protected, orderly and lushly abundant with flowers of all sorts.

And of course, as with all medieval painting, the specific types of flowers have symbolic meaning. Roses are an especially rich source of visual symbols, that mainly come from the Song of Songs, with the garden imagery generally, is widely applied typologically to Mary in patristic and medieval exegesis, the Virgin as a sealed sanctuary, the place where heaven enters history without breach or violence. The rose without thorns is a common medieval trope and signifies Mary conceived without stain of sin; red roses allude both to Christ’s Incarnation through His mother, and to His Passion; white roses signify Marian purity.

The Virgin and Child in the heavenly joys

The Hortus Conclusus type resembles the Virgin Enthroned, or the Seat of Wisdom prototypes we’ve already looked at.

In both, we see the Virgin and Child seated hieratically, with the crown showing her status as the Queen of Heaven, while the Christ Child, who is alert and frontal, participates in the same hieratic calm. But we are not in an imperial court. If the Seat of Wisdom is the vision of the throne room, the Hortus Conclusus is the Virgin, with Christ, and her court of angels and saints in relaxed intimacy, enjoying the beauties and joys of the heavenly realms.

We are in the garden too

The enclosed garden does not function solely as a symbolic stand-in for Mary. It is also as an image of the human soul ordered toward union with God in Patristic and medieval exegesis that frequently read the Song of Songs simultaneously as Marian, ecclesial and interior. The hortus conclusus signifies the soul purified, guarded and set aside for the indwelling of the Divine Spouse.

This double reading allows the viewer to contemplate Mary as exemplar while understanding the enclosed space as an aspirational interior state. Mystical writers have always spoken of the soul as a “garden enclosed,” a place where we meet Christ in intimacy.

The late Gothic outward-reaching perspective is less concerned with strict mathematical spatial recession than with devotional accessibility. It draws the eye inward, encouraging contemplative entry into the enclosed garden as a shared spiritual space.

An icon of kingship

On the left panel, King Richard II kneels in prayer and adoration and is, presented by three highly symbolically significant saints, Edmund the Martyr (arrow), Edward the Confessor (ring) and John the Baptist (lamb). Richard wears a gold-patterned robe decorated with white harts, his personal badge.

The right panel shows the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, surrounded by eleven angels. The angels wear Richard’s white hart emblem, connecting the heavenly court to the English king. One of the angels holds a banner bearing the Cross of St George, the heraldic emblem of the English nation.

God’s anointed

Richard is depicted as a boy-king, a fresh and innocent face and clear expression - with the glowing luminosity of egg tempera rendering - as he adores the Christ Child held by Mary in the opposite panel, and is presented to heaven by St. John the Baptist, called by Christ the greatest in heaven. This was a depiction of the ideal king, anointed and granted to a Christian nation by God.

The diptych is more than a religious icon, it represents the kingship theology held by the Plantagenet monarchs of England that conceived the king as a divinely consecrated leader accountable to God. His royal authority was derived from and participated in that of God, to occupy the highest place in a divinely ordered social hierarchy. These ideas came out of Old Testament models of anointed rule of Saul, David and Solomon, and formed the foundation of the Carolingian ideal of the ruler endorsed by God through the Church rather than through force of arms.

St. Edward the Confessor (r. 1003/1005 – 5 January 1066), was the son of King Æthelred the Unready and Emma of Normandy, and was the last crowned king of the Saxon House of Wessex. He is included in the diptych to anchor’s Richard’s rule to the pre-Conquest royal line, an attempt to present that historical rupture as a providential continuity. St. Edward’s ring refers to the legend of the ring he gave to a beggar, who was later revealed as St. John the Evangelist in disguise. It was miraculously returned to Edward shortly before his death as a sign of divine favour and assurance of salvation.

St. Edmund the Martyr (r. 962 – 18 March 978) embodied sacrificial kingship who chose death (by being shot with an arrow by Viking raiders) rather than reject Christ and submit the nation to pagan domination, thereby uniting royal authority with holy martyrdom.

The Wilton Diptych is one of the most famous examples of the International Gothic court style of the late 14th century, characterised by elegant elongation of figures, refined gestures, delicate rendering and much gold-tooled surface richness.

The Abbey of Novalesa, in the Val Cenischia in Piemonte, was built on a major Alpine transit route between Italy and Gaul. In our day it is remote and obscure, but it boasts one of the most arresting Pantocrators that survives from the Romanesque period.

He looks at you like he’s about to shoot lasers out of those eyes. He nails you to the floor with them. The eyes bore directly into your soul, not allowing any aesthetic psychological or intellectual distancing. This is the Divine Judge, looking right through every defence you have, the one who knows you better than you know yourself, the kind of depiction of Christ that moderns aren’t ready for.

Typical Romanesque with its linear and geometric highly stylised figures, the Pantocrator dominates the apse of the small chapel with an uncompromising frontal gaze and rigid hieratic form. Surrounded by a mandorla and flanked by angels and saints, the apse fresco establishes a tightly ordered cosmic hierarchy, anchoring the liturgy within a visual theology of authority and immediate divine presence.

Abbey of Sts. Peter and Andrew of Novalesa

Abbo of Provence, a Frankish aristocrat and imperial official of the Carolingian Empire, founded it with a gift of land in 726 as a Benedictine monastery, using at that time a combined rule of St. Benedict and Columbanus - which tells us how trans-national Carolingian culture was. The abbey was a major religious, cultural and logistical centre on an important transalpine route, closely connected to Frankish and Carolingian monastic networks. It also lies along the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome.

Saint Eldradus fresco cycle

During renovations, St. Eldradus’ sarcophagus was discovered in the chapel named for him. He was the abbot of the second quarter of the 9th century, who died with a reputation for sanctity.

Yes, you can go there

It is today a living Benedictine monastery once again; the international OSB website says there are 8 monks with 20 oblates. It was, like nearly all monastic houses in Italy, suppressed in the mid 19th century by the anticlericalist government. It was re-colonised in 1973 by a group of monks from Venice.

They have a guest house and visitors may attend the Offices and Mass.

The Virgin is depicted as a Byzantine empress. Seated immobile and frontally on an ornate throne, with a regal bearing, her gaze is directed outward toward the viewer. The Christ Child, depicted as a miniature adult, is enthroned upon her lap, holding a scroll in His left hand and giving a gesture of blessing with His right. The expressions are beneficent, but not emotive. The image confronts us with the eternal realities of the divine realm, the royal court of heaven.

The Throne of Wisdom (Sedes Sapientiae) is an iconographic prototype whose origins can be traced back to the earliest times. This rigorously controlled image contains a wealth of theological meaning: motherhood, royalty, the Incarnation, and the nature of the Church converge without narrative.

When we say the characteristics of icons must include elements like “hieratic frontality” and “monumentality,” the Throne of Wisdom prototype is the perfect example. This is part of visual grammar we’ve been discussing that deliberately suppresses movement, narrative, and psychological or emotional expression in order to present an eternal reality. These are images whose first purpose is presence and divine ontology rather than storytelling or didactic teaching.

The prototype appears very early, in sixth-century mosaics and encaustic icons, including those preserved at the Saint Catherine’s Monastery. Christ sits upon the Theotokos simultaneously as king and as child, expressing both authority and intimacy without tension.

The Virgin is the “mercy seat” of the Ark of the Covenant, the seat and support of the glory of God. Mary’s body functions architectonically, enclosing and framing Christ, transforming herself into a locus, a divine throne, rather than a participant in any narrative action.

The Throne of Wisdom visually describes who Christ is in relation to Mary (and therefore humanity) and who Mary is in relation to Christ. He appears as Wisdom incarnate. She represents creation that, without the degradation of sin, is fully receptive to divine presence, as such it is a symbol of the redeemed and perfected relationship between Man and God. The image is also ecclesiological, with Mary symbolising the Church, with Christ as its heart and governing principle.

Across all examples the essential visual grammar remains intact: frontality, hieratic containment, narrative stillness, monumentality, symmetry and emotional restraint.
