I"ve always been at a loss in understanding icons so this was enlightening and eye opening. The video was most helpful, also. Western art has always told stories to me because I understand it's symbology and vocabulary. I see where I need to work on learning more about the vocabulary and symbols used in icons. Thank you for educating me today--as you do so many days!
🌍✍🏼⛪Even if perhaps you are not a Religious, I do consider you a sister in Christ! My wife, sons and I all love Italy as well. Grace and peace to you, Christ is RISEN!
Last night as we made our way to the vigil mass there were fireworks going off for a good half hour or more. It was disconcerting to realize how the world continues on with sporting events even on Easter weekend. As a child, I remember how all businesses and activities ceased on Easter weekend. The world no longer pauses to remember her savior. We are truly in a post Christian era.
However, I had been reflecting on the Harrowing of hell all throughout the day. And an insight thrilled me. Fireworks must have been going off in a blinding profusion as Christ, stronger than Sampson, threw down the gates of death and hell and trampled them. The demons must have run scattering like roaches before the blazing Light that descended to shine in the darkness of death and release the captives.
The fireworks became a reminder to me that even in this crazy mixed up world, God can still time events to magnify His Triumphal Victory. Christ is risen indeed, trampling death by death!
We have been accustomed to using the term “post Christian.” Just the other day my husband corrected me: there is no such era as post Christian. Christ is with us until the end of time. Our era is Anti-Christian.
Thank you Hilary for all your insightful and learned lessons! Buona Pasqua!

Beautiful explanation of these holy icons of the Church. The East truly has a way of demonstrating truth through symbol.
